Eating Habits in Ukraine
Ukrainian cuisine
is very similar to various European food. The ingredients are all the same: beef,
pork, potatoes,
chicken, beet, dough, milk
and sour cream,
cherries, apples, mushrooms and bread of course.
Ukrainians usually have 3 meals a day and a snack
during the day.
The visitor who comes to Ukraine
for the first time might be shocked
to know that it is accustomed in Ukraine almost
in every family to cook all the food (from the first to the third course).
Office workers bring homemade food to work to eat it
during the lunch time. Many companies
buy fridges for keeping food fresh.
It is
common for people in Ukraine to invite guests and foreigners home, where they serve the
table with their best food and drinks, trying to impress guests with a great variety of home made dishes.
Ukrainians drink horilka and some other strong drinks when they have
guests.
Ukrainians spend hours at the table
communicating, eating and drinking. Ukrainians eat borscht - a kind of soup,
which consists of lots of vegetables. The most traditional dish in Ukraine is
varenyky. They can be made with every filling
you can imagine. But the most
popular are varenyky with cabbage, potatoes and cottage cheese.
Ukrainians also eat "salo" - a pig's fat,
which can be prepared with pepper, salt and garlic. During holidays people cook
a lot of food and eat it together with friends and relatives.
