MY NATIVE CITY
Chernihiv is one of the most ancient and
beautiful cities situated on the high right bank of the Desna
River in the north of Ukraine. Its
total area is 64 km2, and its
population is 301 100. Ukrainians, Russians and Belarusians live here.
It is the second oldest city after
Kyiv. It is about 1300 years old.
Historical science testifies to the fact
that people settled in the area one
hundred thousand years ago. Chernihiv was
founded in the 7th century and named
after the prince Chorny.
The local climate is temperate
continental, the average temperatures of January and July, the coldest and the
hottest months of the year, are respectively -7˚C and +19˚C.
Chernihiv is an important transportation crossing of roads and
railways of both international and national importance. It is the capital of Chernihiv Region, which includes
22 districts, 15 towns, 31 settlements and 1519 villages.
Chernihiv is the cultural centre, there is
a Drama theatre, Youth and Puppet theatres, Philharmonic, a few Houses of
Culture and cinemas, there are 35 general
secondary schools here.
The main educational establishments worth
mentioning are the Chernihiv Taras
Shevchenko Pedagogical
University, the Chernihiv Technological
University, the Chernihiv Institute of Economy and
Management, the Chernihiv Levko Revutskyy
Musical College,
and 8 technical secondary schools.
Red Square has appeared in Chernigov in XVIII-XIX
centuries and nowadays it is the central city square.
Chernihiv region is rich in gas, oil, peat and construction materials (sand and clay).
