Geographical Position of Ukraine
Ukraine is my Motherland and I’m very proud to live here. So I’d like to tell you about my country.Ukraine is the second largest European country. It is situated in the east of Europe. The territory of Ukraine is 603 700 square kilometers. The capital of Ukraine is Kyiv The country borders on Poland, Slovakia and Hungary in the west, Belarus in the north, Moldova and Romania in the south-west and Russia in the east. In the south it’s washed by the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov and has very important ports.
5% of Ukraine’s territory is mountainous; the rest part of the Ukrainian area is flat. There are the Carpathian Mountains(the Carpathians) in the west and the Crimean Mountains in the south, but they are not high. The highest mountain is Hoverla. It is 2061 meters high. The Carpathians is the natural mountainous boundary of Ukraine. They are covered with mixed forests of pine, fir, beech and oak trees.
The Dnieper is the main river of the country; moreover, it’s the third longest river in Europe. Such rivers as the Dniester, the Southern Bug and the Seversky Donets are also important.
The population of our country is about 46 million people. Besides Ukrainians the representatives of many other nationalities live there: Russians, Jews, Belarusians, Moldavians, Romanians, Greeks, Tatars, Poles, Armenians, Germans, Gypsies and others
The biggest cities of Ukraine are Kyiv, Kharkiv, Lviv, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhya, Donetsk, Odessa, Mykolaiv and others.
The most famous National parks are Askania-Nova (Khersonska Oblast); Shatskiy National Park (Volynska Oblast), Sofiyvka (Cherkaska Oblast); Trostianetsk Hydropark (Chernihivska Oblast).
Ukraine is a developed industrial and agricultural country. It’s rich in iron ore, coal, natural gas, oil, salt and other mineral resources
