Degrees of Comparison of Adjectives

     Прикметники в англійській мові змінюються лише за ступенями порівняння. Вони мають:

Основну форму (the positive degree), вищий ступень порівняння (the comparative degree) і найвищий (the superlative degree).

Форми вищого і найвищого ступенів порівняння прикметників можуть бути, як і в української мові, простими і складеними.

ПРОСТІ ФОРМИ

Утворюються додаванням до основної форми прикметника суфікса -er [ə] у вищому і -est [ıst][əst] у найвищому ступені:

             Cold – colder – (the) coldest

Холодний – холодніший – найхолодніший

Перед іменником, що визначається прикметником у найвищому ступені, ставиться означений артикль the.

The coldest day – найхолодніший день

Прості форми ступенів порівняння мають:

а) усі односкладові прикметники:

short – shorter – (the) shortest

b) двоскладові прикметники, що закінчуються на – y, - er, -le, - ow:

heavy – heavier – (the) heaviest

clever – cleverer – (the) cleverest

simple – simple – (the) simplest

narrow – narrower – (the) narrowest

c) двоскладові прикметники з наголосом на другому складі:

poˈlite – politer – (the) politest

Правила правопису простих форм ступенів порівняння прикметників:

а) німе -е перед -er та – est випадає:

large – larger – (the) largest

b) якщо односкладовий прикметник закінчується однією приголосною, якій передує        короткий голосний звук, то кінцева приголосна подвоюється:

big – bigger – (the) biggest

c) Якщо прикметник закінчується буквою – y, з попередньою приголосною, то перед -er, -est y змінюється на -i:

dirty – dirtier – (the) dirtiest

Примітка№1 Прикметники, ступені порівняння яких звичайно утворюються за допомогою закінчень -er, -est, можуть мати також складені форми ступенів порівняння, але вони вживаються дуже рідко, здебільшого з метою підсилення.

Примітка №2 В прикметниках longer – the longest; stronger – the strongest; younger – the youngest вимовляється звук [g]

СКЛАДЕНІ ФОРМИ

утворюються додаванням до основної форми прикметника слова more (більш) - у вищому ступені і most (найбільший) - у найвищому.

Dangerous – more dangerous – (the) most dangerous

Небезпечний – небезпечніший ( або більш небезпечний) – найнебезпечніший (або найбільш небезпечний)

Складені форми ступенів порівняння мають:

1. Усі багатоскладові прикметники (з кількістю складів більше двох)

2. Та двоскладові прикметники: а) з наголосом на першому складі; b) крім тих, що закінчуються на – y, - er, -le, -ow.

Elder i eldest вживаються, коли йдеться про членів однієї сім’ї (my elder brother мій старший брат), але якщо при порівнянні є слово than ніж, то вживається форма older, а не elder (He is three years older than his sister).

При порівнянні предметів з однаковою мірою якості вживається прикметник в основній формі, який ставиться між as…as: as tall as – такий же високий, як; as dangerous as – такий же небезпечний, як

February was as cold as January. – Лютий був такий же холодній, як і січень.

Заперечення:

June is not as (so) hot as July. Червень не такий жаркий, як липень.
