Past Simple

Вживається

1. Для вираження дії, що відбулась і завершилась у певний момент у минулому.
The Greens bought a new house last year.

2. Для вираження дій, які відбулися одна за одною послідовно та без великих інтервалів у часі.

He painted the walls in the bedroom and then washed his hands

3. Для минулих звичок і станів, які тепер закінчені. (У таких випадках ми також можемо використовувати вираз used to)

I lived (used to live) in Manchester three years ago.

 

Past Continuous

WAS/WERE + Ving

вживається

1. Для вираження дії, що тривала (відбувалась) у певний момент у минулому.

They were having breakfast at 9 yesterday.

2. Для вираження дії, що тривала (відбувалась) протягом якогось періоду часу в минулому.

She was cooking the whole morning on Saturday

3. Для вираження двох і більше дій, які тривали одночасно в минулому.

I was doing my homework while my sister was playing with her toys.

4. Для вираження дії, що тривала у минулому, а інша її перервала.

Jack was walking the dog when he saw Dave.

5. Якщо ми описуємо події, що є фоном основних подій у минулому.

The sun was shining brightly. The wind was blowing and the birds were singing when I heard a strange noise.

 

Past Perfect

HAD + V3

вживається
1. Для вираження дії, яка закінчилась до певного моменту у минулому.
 Molly had cleaned the room by 7 o`clock yesterday.

When they arrived

2. Для вираження дії, яка закінчилась до початку іншої минулої дії.

The train had already arrived when Sam came to the platform.
