Geographical Position.
The
British Isles are a group of islands lying to the north-west of the
continent of Europe. The British Isles consist of two large islands,
Great Britain and Ireland, and about five thousand small islands. The
two islands are separated by the Irish Sea.

United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is the official
name of the state which is situated in the British Isles. It consists of
four countries which are England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
England, Wales and Scotland are situated in Great Britain. Their
capitals are London, Cardiff and Edinburgh respectively. Northern
Ireland is situated in the north-eastern part of Ireland. Its capital is
Belfast. The larger part of Ireland is the independent Irish Republic.

continent. The nearest point to Europe is the Strait of Dover
The United Kingdom is also washed by the Atlantic Ocean in the north and the North Sea in the east.

of the United Kingdom is about 244000 square kilometres. It is the 75th
place among other countries in the world. The population is over 55
million.
