Unless or until?

Unless and until have different meanings and are used in different contexts.

1.    Unless (if not)

Unless перекладається ‘якщо не’. Підкреслює умову, яка має бути виконана, щоб щось сталося.

Examples:

a)   Unless you study, you won't pass the exam. (If you don't study, you won't pass the exam.) Якщо ти не будеш вчитися, то не складеш іспит.

b)   You can't play outside unless you finish your homework. (If you don't finish your homework, you can't play outside.)

Якщо ви не закінчите домашнє завдання, ви не зможете грати на вулиці.

2.    Until

Until перекладається ‘поки’, ‘до’. Вказує момент часу, до якого дія або подія не відбудеться (зосереджується на часі чи події, яка позначає кінець зазначеного періоду).

Examples:

a)   We have to wait here until the bus arrives. (We need to wait here until the bus comes.) Нам потрібно почекати тут, поки прийде автобус.

b)   Please don't open the oven until the timer goes off. (Wait for the timer to go off before opening the oven.) Будь ласка, не відкривайте духовку, доки не спрацює таймер.

2. Exercise 

Instructions: Choose the correct conjunction, "unless" or "until," to complete each sentence.

1. I won't go swimming __________ the water gets warmer.
2. __________ you finish your chores, you can't go to the park.
3. The store will remain closed __________ further notice.
4. We can't start the game __________ everyone arrives.
5. Please don't start eating __________ everyone is seated at the table.
6. You won't understand the concept fully __________ you ask questions.

8. We won't have a picnic __________ the rain stops.

3. Rewrite the following sentences as mixed conditional sentences. Use the provided examples as a guide.

Example 1

You did not wake me up. Now I am late for my appointment.

→ If you had woken me up, I would not be late for my appointment now.

Example 2

She is not well-qualified. She did not get the job.

→ If she were well-qualified, she would have got the job.

He did not call his friend. Now he does not know about the change in plans.

He is not attentive in class. He did not grasp the concepts.

I am not skilled in coding. I did not complete the programming task.

She did not practice the dance routine. Now she is making mistakes during the performance.

She is not dedicated. She did not achieve her goals.

They are not experienced. They did not secure the contract.

They did not attend the meeting. Now they are unaware of the important updates.

They did not follow the instructions. Now they are confused about the task.

We are not careful with details. We did not notice the errors.

We did not pack our bags. Now we do not have our essentials for the trip.
