Offer or suggest

'Offer' is used when you ask if someone would like something from you, either a thing or some help. For example, 'Do you want to borrow my phone?' or 'Can I help you carry those bags?'

The store owner offered a discount on all the items.

I offered to lend my friend some money.

The company offered her a job as a manager.

He offered his seat to the elderly lady on the bus.

Mom offered to drive me to the store.

‘Suggest’ is used when you are proposing an idea, recommending a course of action, or giving some advice to someone. For example, 'Let's go to the beach' or 'Why not paint the room blue?'

I suggest studying for the test in advance to be well-prepared. – an idea or course of action

He suggested going to the beach for a day of fun.

The teacher suggested using a different approach to solve the math problem.

She suggested trying a new restaurant for dinner.

The doctor suggested taking medication for the flu.

Note: the usage of "offer" and "suggest" can vary /ˈveəri/ depending on the context and intended meaning.

 

Patterns with suggest

1. You suggest something to someone:

He suggested a solution to us.

✗Don’t say: He suggested us a solution.

2. You suggest doing something:

I suggested going for a walk in the park.

✗Don’t say: I suggested to go for a walk in the park.

3. You can also use the base form of the verb when talking about the past:

I suggested that she (should)wait a few weeks.

 

Patterns with offer

1.   offer somebody something

  They offered him a very good job.

2.   offer something to somebody

  The drama school offers places to students who can show talent.

3.   offer to do something

 My dad has offered to pick us up.

 The newspaper offered to apologise for the article.

4.   offer advice/help/support; an opportunity/chance/possibility etc

 Your doctor should be able to offer advice on diet.

2. Fill in ‘offer’ or ‘suggest’.

3. Convert the following sentences into reported speech using the introductory verbs 'offer' and 'suggest'. Make sure to use the correct verb tense and pronoun changes as necessary.

3. "Let's bake cookies for dessert," said Mom.
4. "Would you like to join us for dinner?" said Peter.

3. Sequences of Tenses

Узгодження часів в англійській – це ситуація, в якій вживання часу в підрядному реченні залежить від часу головного речення. Причому це правило застосовується тільки у випадках з минулим часом.

1.   Якщо в головному реченні присудок виражає минулу дію, а дія підрядного речення відбувається  в той самий період часу, що й дія головного, то в підрядному реченні вживається Past Simple or Past Continuous.

В української мові дієслово підрядного речення перекладається теперішнім часом.

He lives in London. - Bін живе в Лондоні.

I thought he lived in London. - Я думав, що він живе в Лондоні.

Mother is sleeping. - Mама спить

I knew that Mother was sleeping. - Я знала, що мама спить.

Translate:

I thought you were his friend.

Who told you I was there.

They knew what they were fighting for.

You hadn`t told me where you were going.

2.   Якщо в головному реченні присудок виражає минулу дію, а дія підрядного речення відбулася раніше дії головного, то в підрядному реченні вживається Past Perfect.

В української мові дієслово підрядного речення перекладається минулим часом.

He has returned from London.

I was told that he had returned from London. - Мені сказали, що він повернувся з Лондона.

He bought a new car.

I heard he had bought a new car. - Я чув, що він купив нову машину.

Translate:

I thought he had left England.

We asked him if anything had happened.

I asked him how long he had been in the tunnel.

3.   Якщо в головному реченні присудок виражає минулу дію, а дія підрядного речення є майбутньою з точкі зору дії головного речення, то в підрядному реченні вживається Future-in-the-Past

В української мові дієслово підрядного речення перекладається майбутнім часом.

He will send us a letter.

I supposed that he would send us a letter. - Я припускав, що він пришле нам листа.

Translate:

I knew that you would understand me.

You said you would come.

4.   Якщо в головному реченні присудок виражає минулу дію, а дія підрядного речення тривала певний проміжок часу раніше дії головного речення, то в підрядному реченні використовується Past Perfect Continuous.

I have been playing the violin the whole morning.

She said she had been playing the violin the whole morning. –

Вона сказала, що грала на скрипці цілий ранок.

He told me he had been studying English for three hours before he went to bed. - Він сказав мені, що вивчав англійську три години перед тим, як піти спати.

5.   Якщо підрядне речення підпорядковано не головному, а іншому підрядному реченню, то воно і узгоджується ц цім підрядним реченням, а не з часом дієслова головного речення.

He said that his sister had written him that she worked at a plant. - Він сказав, що його сестра написала йому, що вона працює на заводі

 Учитель сказав нам, що нам слід старанно вчитися, якщо ми хочемо скласти тест, який він дасть нам наступного тижня.

 He said that he was planning to go on a trip to Europe and that he hoped to visit several countries that he had never been to before.

  Він сказав, що планує поїхати в подорож Європою і сподівається відвідати кілька країн, у яких ніколи раніше не був.

 He asked if I had seen his keys and if I knew where he had left them.

 Він запитав, чи бачив я його ключі і чи знаю, де він їх залишив.
