Rule for Forming Compound Adjectives with Numbers and Nouns

(Правило утворення складних прикметників із числами та іменниками)

When a number and a noun are combined to describe another noun, they form a compound adjective and are usually hyphenated /ˈhaɪfən/.

(Коли число та іменник поєднуються для опису іншого іменника, вони утворюють складний прикметник і зазвичай ставляться через дефіс.)

 

• The noun in the compound adjective is always in singular form.

(Іменник у складному прикметнику завжди стоїть у формі однини.)

• The number is often used to specify a quantity, measurement, or age.

(Число часто використовується для визначення кількості, вимірювання або віку.)

Examples:

1.     a 5-star hotel: The hotel has five stars.

2.     a 6-year-old boy: The boy is six years old.

3.     a 3-bedroom apartment: The apartment has three bedrooms.

4.     a 4-door sedan /sɪˈdæn/ : The sedan has four doors.

5.     an 8-hour flight: The flight lasts eight hours.

Wish/ if only

Wish/ if only + past simple/past continuous (відноситься до теперішнього часу)

To say that we would like something to be different in the present

(коли йдеться про бажання змінити теперішню ситуацію)

I wish/if only I were with you. (Я би хотів бути з вами. На жаль (шкода, що), я не з вами.)

I wish/ if only I had some free time. (Я би хотів мати трохи вільного часу. На жаль (шкода, що), я не маю вільного часу.)

Translate:

If only it weren’t raining today.

I wish I knew how to play the guitar.

Translate:

Якби у мене було більше грошей, я міг би купити цю машину.

If only I had more money, I could buy that car.

Хотів би я бути вищим.

Wish/ if only + past perfect (відноситься до минулого часу)

To express regret that something happened or didn`t happen in the past

( коли йдеться про бажання, які неможливо було реалізувати у минулому. Або висловлюється жаль що до того, що сталось чи не сталось у минулому)

I wish/if only I had bought that camera. (На жаль /шкода що, я не купив той фотоапарат. Якби тільки я купив той фотоапарат.)

I wish/if only I hadn`t stolen the motorbike. (На жаль/шкода що, я вкрав мотоцикл . Якби тільки я не вкрав мотоцикл.)

Translate:

I wish I had studied harder for the exam.

If only I hadn't missed the bus this morning.

Translate:

На жаль, я не прислухався до батьківськіх порад.

If only I had listened to my parents' advice.

Шкода, що я зїв стільки шкідливої ​​їжі вчора.

Wish/if only + would (відноситься до майбутнього)

a)    For a polite imperative

Для ввічливого (наказа) наказового способу

I wish you would pay more attention to this.

Я б хотів, щоб ви приділяли цьому більше уваги.

I wish you would please close the door quietly.

Я б хотів, щоб ви тихенько зачинили двері.

Translate:

If only you would kindly lower your voice.

I wish the company would provide more training opportunities.

 

 

Translate:

If only you would (please) wait for a moment.

Якби вони тільки вимкнули мобільні телефони під час виступу.

 

 

If only they would please turn off their cell phones during the performance.

b)   To express our desire for a change in a situation or someone`s behaviour.

Щоб висловити наше бажання змінити ситуацію чи чиюсь поведінку (бажання що до майбутнього)

I wish/if only he wouldn’t give me so much work

Я хотів/якби він не давав мені стільки роботи

If only my roommate would clean up after themselves.

Якби мій сусід по кімнаті прибирав за собою.

 

Translate:

I wish my neighbours would keep the noise down.

If only it would stop raining so, I could go for a walk.

 

Translate:

Якби тільки мій комп'ютер працював нормально.

 

 

 

If only my computer would work properly.

 

Хотілося б, щоб колеги прислухалися до моїх ідей.

 

 

 

I wish my colleagues would listen to my ideas.

 

Note:

After I and we use could instead of would

I wish I could come with you. (шкода, що я не можу піти з тобою)
