Rule for Forming Compound Adjectives with Numbers and Nouns

(Правило утворення складних прикметників із числами та іменниками)

When a number and a noun are combined to describe another noun, they form a compound adjective and are usually hyphenated /ˈhaɪfən/.

(Коли число та іменник поєднуються для опису іншого іменника, вони утворюють складний прикметник і зазвичай ставляться через дефіс.)

 

• The noun in the compound adjective is always in singular form.

(Іменник у складному прикметнику завжди стоїть у формі однини.)

• The number is often used to specify a quantity, measurement, or age.

(Число часто використовується для визначення кількості, вимірювання або віку.)

Examples:

1.  A 5-star hotel: The hotel has five stars.

2.  A 6-year-old boy: The boy is six years old.

3.  A 3-bedroom apartment: The apartment has three bedrooms.

4.  A 4-door sedan /sɪˈdæn/ : The sedan has four doors.

5.     An 8-hour flight: The flight lasts eight hours.
